For the first time in my life (in my 40's here) I've developed eczema which is a constant issue in the background here at the moment. I'm just wondering if any other grapplers are managing it and how you go about doing so? Obviously I'm washing my kit and doing an extra rinse to get the detergent out, showering as soon as possible after training etc... As one patch clears up with emollient another pops up, getting a bit frustrating

Grappling doesn’t cause eczema, but it’s definitely one of the most eczema‑unfriendly environments you can train in. The heat, sweat, friction, and constant skin‑to‑skin contact create the perfect storm for triggering or worsening flare‑ups.

Using a good barrier cream before training and showering within 30 minutes afterward makes a big difference. A fragrance‑free moisturizer has helped me a lot as well.

It sounds like you’re already doing the right things. People who are predisposed to eczema are basically placed in the “ideal” conditions for a flare when training Jiu Jitsu.

Thanks man, it's really annoying... hope it's not going to be a persistent thing I have no idea where it came from. I'm applying emollient three times a day anyway but on your suggestion I might have an extra one right before training. I'm cautious about using the steroid creams because it seems that they can thin the skin over time which is the last thing you need in this sport.

Mine started before BJJ do to exposure to toxic chemicals. I have been using steroid creams off and on for years, and honestly in my case, I do not think it messed with the skin thinning. I did find however the steps i put above help to keep it under control as much as it can be for me. I have a friend that started to use the barrier cream, and his is almost non-existent. GOOD LUCK
